Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Research facts on water conservation and water-saving tips and take notes of their findings
- Calculate their homes’ water use in gallons and analyze the results
- Investigate different examples of public service announcements and analyze three examples
- Write a review of one public service announcement and share their review with the class
- Create an original public service announcement about saving water using their choice of technology tools

Materials
- Computers
- Internet Access
- Online resources posted on class blog
- Online computer programs: Animoto, BitStrips
- Computer programs: Microsoft Powerpoint (or equivalent), imovie
Session 1: Researching Water Conservation
- Students begin by meeting with their groups and deciding on each student’s role in the group. These roles include note-taker, computer navigator, discussion leader, and recorder, and students may rotate roles over the course of three sessions in order to share responsibilities.
- Students then play an introductory game at this website with their groups in which they have to match water use in gallons to different household and societal activities. Students discuss the answers to this game to build their background information on water use.
- Next, students begin their research on water conservation and water-saving tips by browsing a number of online resources.
- Students record facts/notes on water conservation and water-saving tips on a designated worksheet.
- After completing their research, students participate in an online discussion by answering a discussion question on the class blog. Students answer the following question: “After reading this information about water conservation and water-saving tips, what do you think the average American would need to know to be convinced to save water? What would someone need to tell you to save water? Do you think it would be easy to get most Americans to change their habits to save water?”
- As follow-up homework that evening, students use an online tool (Water Use Calculator ) to calculate their family’s household water use and answer questions about what they found.
- Students begin by discussing the results of their homework assignments with their groups. Students discuss whether they were surprised by the results of the online tool.
- Next, students research different forms of public service announcements by viewing a number of online resources collected on the class blog.
- Students pick three of these resources to analyze in more detail and fill out information on a worksheet describing the resources’ message, strategy, format, and their own opinions of the effectiveness of the message.
- Students reflect on this experience by choosing one public service announcement/resource they would like to formally review. Students write a review for this resource and post it on the class blog.
- Students meet with their groups to begin planning for the creation of their original public service announcements.
- Students answer several planning questions to help them decide on their project’s format, message, and information.
- Students reflect on the examples of public service announcements they watched in previous sessions and decide on which elements they would like to emulate in their own projects.
- Students create original public service announcements using one of the following technologies:
- Animoto
- Imovie
- Powerpoint Presentations
- Bit Strips
- Podcasts (audio recording)

Student Discussion 2: Investigating Public Service Announcements
After looking at at least three public service announcements or other message-related media, choose one to review for the rest of the class. With your group, explain what you liked and didn't like about the resource. Was there a way the program might have been more effective?
Remember to include the name of the public service announcement/program you are reviewing in your response!

Part 1: Presentation to Students
Hi class!
We have spent a very exciting summer studying all about water. We’ve studied the water cycle, measured and graphed our own water use, compared water use in New York to water use in other countries, and we’ve learned the importance of saving water. Now it is time to apply what we’ve learned to create final projects that will teach others about saving water!
Over the next three class sessions, you will be working in groups to create your own public service announcements about saving water. A public service announcement is a type of advertisement or message that tries to educate people about a specific issue. Public service announcements can take the form of television commercials, videos, radio shows, or other media. You and your group will decide what format you will use to educate the public about water-saving tips.
Here are the guidelines for your final group projects:
1) Your group will make a public service announcement using one of the following formats:
2) Each of your projects must contain the following:

3) Your group will be graded using this rubric:
Let's get to work!
Session 1: Researching Water Conservation
Today you will be working with your groups to learn more about water conservation and specific water-saving tips to include as content for your projects.
Introduction/Background Knowledge
1. First, meet with your groups and decide on group roles. Each student must have one of the following roles:
3. Reflection
After looking at at least three of the above resources, choose one to review for the rest of the class. What did you like about it? What did you not like about it? Was there a way the program might have been more effective?
Record your group's answer here: Student Discussion 2: Investigating Public Service Announcements
Session 3: Creating Original Public Service Announcements
Introduction: Today you will create an original public service announcement with your group using one of several media programs. Remember, your projects must contain the following information:
o At least one water-saving technique or tip
o At least one statistic or fact about water use or conservation
o At least one reason why saving water is important
You may use the following programs to present your project:
o Podcasts
o Videos (using animoto or imovie)
o Powerpoint presentations
o Comic strips (using Bit Strips or Comic Book Creator)
Task:
1. Planning
As a group, you will begin the planning and creating stages of your final project. Before you begin making your project, please answer the following planning questions with your group:
1. What do we want our message to be?
2. Who do we want to be our audience?
3. What format do we want to use to present our message?
4. What can we incorporate from other examples we’ve seen to make our project a great one?
2. Creating
Now create an original public service announcement with your group. Be sure to refer back to the note facts you took during your research to help you with content for your projects. Take a look at an example I made using BitStrips: Leaky Shower Showdown
Remember, we will be presenting these projects to the rest of the school and posting them on our class blog, so make these something you are proud to show off!
2. Sharing
When your group has completed their project, you will post them on the class blog to share them with the class. Wait for instructions from your teacher on how to post your chosen format!

c. What activity do you think makes your family use the most water?
d. Do you think there are other activities that cause you to use a lot of water that were not included in this measurement? What are they?
Session 2: Investigating Public Service Announcements
Task:
1. Discussion
With your group, discuss the results of your homework experiments. Were you surprised by the results of your household water use? Which of your group member's household used the most water? Which member's family used the least? Why do you think that is?
2. Research
With your group, choose three of the videos and other media linked here to watch.
